Linear Garden is an interior renovation for a 40 sqm residence in Shanghai. It is designed for a young couple who wish to comprise both warm natural and cold industrial interiors within the space.

 

Instead of implementing two distinct ambiences in this small apartment, the design seeks to create a gradual shift of moods on a daily life basis. An overall gradation of tone from light to dark, from warm to cold, is set along the rectilinear space with the application of different materials. Various daily programs are arranged sequentially within each specific zoning designated by partition walls.

Discrete as it seems, the linear sequence of programs are all cohered towards two important ‘Spatial Connectors’. First is a continuous strip of white gravels aligned with a neutral passage that allows for circulation between programs. Second is a linear counter of consistent height piercing through all the spaces, offering functional needs like bookshelves in bedroom, cabinets in kitchen, make-up desk in walk-in closet. Rooms share common within discrepancy.

The design also aims to incorporate exterior elements into interior space, especially in a tiny living realm. By introducing the strip of white gravels, the floor slab has been set free from the bounding walls. The slab then becomes a living platform floating on a garden domain. The border of interior space is no longer distinct. Moving along the linear space is like ambling in a zen garden, creating a new experience of living.
